Government panel to study AI-copyright hasn’t met since June; second working paper delayed: A government-appointed committee examining the intersection of AI and copyright law in India has reportedly stalled, with no meetings since June and its second working paper months overdue. The nine-member committee, constituted by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) in April 2025, was tasked with assessing whether the Copyright Act, 1957, adequately addresses emerging AI-related issues. The pending paper was expected to examine ownership, liability and originality in AI-generated works, including whether such works should qualify for copyright protection. Its first working paper, released in December 2025, proposed a mandatory blanket licensing regime for AI training, under which developers could use lawfully accessed copyrighted material in return for remuneration to rights holders through a central collecting body. While DPIIT invited public comments on the proposal, no revised or final version has been released. See here for more.

Justice Vikas Mahajan also directed Meta, Google and X to remove identified infringing content, while online marketplaces, domain registrars and relevant government authorities were directed to take action against specified links and websites within 72 hours of receiving the order. The court declined to restrain the standalone use of the word “Rowdy”, holding that evidence was needed to establish its exclusive association with the actor. However, AI-generated or morphed images combining the word with his likeness remain covered by the personality rights protection granted. See here for more.
