SMOKING SCENE IN ‘K.G.F CHAPTER 2’ TEASER IRKS KARNATAKA HEALTH DEPARTMENT
The Karnataka State Anti-Tobacco Cell and Health Department have objected to visuals showing actor lighting a cigarette and smoking in the released teaser of film “KGF Chapter 2”. Officials from The Karnataka State Anti-Tobacco Cell decided to seek deletion of the teaser from online platforms, since the visuals showing the actor smoking a cigarette violated Section 5 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) 2003.

FIR AGAINST PRAKASH JHA FOR ‘CASTE DISCRIMINATION’ IN ASHRAM WEB SERIES
An FIR is lodged in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan against filmmaker Prakash Jha for allegedly hurting the sentiments of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes in the web series ‘Aashram’, produced by him. ‘Aashram’ is a Hindi-language crime web series directed by Prakash Jha for MX Player original. The complainant added that due to such “poor and loathsome” portrayal through social sites and web series, incidents like molestation and lynching are taking place during the marriage processions of SC/ST communities in western Rajasthan.

KARNATAKA COURT PUTS VEERAPPAN WEB SERIES ON HOLD AFTER WIFE SEEKS PERMANENT INJUNCTION
The Karnataka High Court granted temporary injunction restraining AMR Pictures from screening, releasing or exhibiting the web series titled “Veerappan” on any platform. Veerappan’s wife V Muthulakshmi submitted an affidavit which stated that the web series-makers of Veerappan are trying to portray the sandalwood smuggler in a poor light based on ‘false and fabricated stories’ and that the release of this web series will have a great impact on their personal life and violate privacy.

PARL PANEL FOR ‘REASONABLE’ CURBS ON OTT CONTENT
CBFC chairman Prasoon Joshi has argued in favour of regulating over the top (OTT) video platforms during a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information and Technology, according to multiple media reports. Led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, the committee had met on Wednesday to review the functioning of the CBFC.

I&B MINISTRY STARTS WORK ON SELF-REGULATION LAW FOR OTT PLATFORMS, ONLINE NEWS
In a not so welcome news for OTT platforms, I&B Ministry has decided to bring in an overarching statute that will provide for self-regulation in digital media including Over-the-top (OTT) platforms and news websites to address issues of sensitive video content and fake news. The issue of self-regulation in digital media was taken up at the highest levels this month. Subsequently, the Ministry Of Information And Broadcasting decided to frame an overarching statute under which the digital media can self-regulate itself.

CHENNAI COURT DIRECTS CB-CID TO REGISTER CASE FOR COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT OVER MUSIC PLAYED IN ‘MASTER’ EVENT
A copyright infringement complaint is filed by Novex Communications Private Limited against the Producer of the film titled ‘Master’. Novex claimed that at the Master movie music release function held at Leela Palace Hotel on 15th March 2020, a few of the songs whose on-ground public performance copyrights for music is owned by Novex Communications Private Limited, were played by Producer without seeking permission from Novex.

ZANJEER COPYRIGHT CASE TO BE PROBED BY CRIME INTELLIGENCE UNIT OF MUMBAI POLICE
Zanjeer copyright case will now be probed by the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) of Mumbai Police. . As per reports, they conducted raids at Box Cinema offices at Chincholi Bunder area of Malad where they seized the server owned by the company along with various document and the owner of the company has received anticipatory bail from Mumbai court.

KERALA ANNOUNCES WAIVER ON ENTERTAINMENT TAX, ELECTRICITY BILLS FOR THEATRES
In a move to help the film industry and cinema halls in Kerala, the Kerala Government decided to exempt entertainment tax for theatres in the state from January to March 2021 along with a 50 % reduction in the fixed charges on electricity during the lockdown period since March last year. The other 50% can be paid in installments.

VIJAY’S ‘MASTER’ CLIPS LEAKED ONLINE
Before the release of Film titled ‘Master’, starring Vijay, Vijay Sethupathi and Malavika Mohanan which is scheduled to be released in theatres on 13th Jan’ 2021, a few scenes have been leaked online. Several members from the film’s crew/team took to social media to appeal to the audience to not share the leaked clips. XB Film Creators shared a post which read, “Team #Master requests you all not to forward/share any leaked content and if you come across anything of these sorts, please share it with us at report@blockxpiracy.com.”

FWICE BANS RGV OVER NON-PAYMENT OF DUES TO ARTISTES AND TECHNICIANS
The Federation of Western India Cine Staff (FWICE) has now determined that none of their 32 unions will ever work with director/film maker Ram Gopal Varma sooner or later. Ram Gopal Varma has been accused of not paying round Rs 1 crore to artistes, technicians, and employees associated to the movie business.

Neena (Sana) Memon the only surviving child of late great filmmaker Guru Dutt has sent a legal notice to Bhavna Talwar for copyright infringement stating that she is the only sole owner of her father’s life story and Talwar’s film “Pyaasa” is an copyright infringement since Sana Memon has not assigned any rights to a third party, production house or studio.

Ashish Kaul, the author of Didda: The Warrior Queen of Kashmir has accused Manikarnika Returns: The Legend of Didda actor Kangana Ranaut for copyright infringement after the actor announced a film on the warrior queen. As per report, the Writer claimed that he has the exclusive copyrights to the life story of Didda who was the Princess of Lohar (Poonch) in Jammu & Kashmir and the Queen of Kashmir.
